McCormick and Schmick's Gluten-Free Menu

Just ask and you shall receive!  We stopped by McCormick and Schmick’s at Bridgewater Mall for lunch this afternoon and were pleasantly surprised to find that they had a gluten-free menu.  We even had the pleasure of chatting with the general manager, John.  You can be sure that we’ll be back for more =)

GFmeals: A SWH Experiment

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again…gluten-free is the way to be!  I always tell my clients to eat gluten-free, whether they have Celiac (a gluten allergy) or not.  Always on the hunt for gluten-free products, meals, and food stores, I came across GFmeals.com – a company endorsed by Jenny McCarthy that provides exactly what the name suggests.

I bought a week’s worth of meals to test out.  I will be rating the meals on a scale of 1-10, and letting you know which ones I recommend.  Check out my reaction to the arrival of GFmeals in the video below!

For more information about gluten and eating gluten-free, take a look at our previous blog entry.  Also, here’s a great article by the New York Times on Celiac – giving you a glimpse into the lives of those who suffer from it.

Joe’s Meat Market: A Gluten-Free Haven for the Health Conscious

You’ve heard of the fat-free, sugar-free, carb-free diets, but what about the gluten-free diet?  Well, gluten-free eating isn’t so much a fad diet like the aforementioned, but a way of life for some, and a healthy way of eating for all.  So, exactly what is gluten and why should you care?

•    Gluten is a type of protein found mostly in starches like cereal, muffins,     pizza, noodles.
•    It stimulates the production of “exorphins”, a “pleasure” chemical very similar to that of endorphins.
•    The release of these chemicals results in heavy addiction to foods with gluten in them.  In the words of Julia Ross, author of “The Diet Cure”, “if you don’t have your bagel and cream cheese with your sweet latte, you won’t get that feeling of comfort that you like so much”.
•    Not only is gluten heavily addicting, it is VERY difficult to digest, has been found to prolong intestinal transit time and may contribute to weight gain.
•    Celiac (gluten allergy condition) and gluten-intolerance often goes undetected in most people.
Joe's Meat Market
When I first heard about Joe’s Meat Market, I couldn’t contain my excitement.  I recommended Joe’s to all my Solaris Whole Health clients before even having had the chance to visit the deli for myself.  Joe’s Meat Market is one of the very few stores located in Somerset County, NJ that offers gluten-free food products.  Solaris Whole Health is always looking for high-performance fast food and Joe’s delivers.

They are a deli, specialty store, restaurant, catering service all rolled into one, AND now almost everything they offer is gluten-free!  There is an entire menu devoted entirely to gluten-free meals – a nutritionist’s dream!  On top of discovering a treasure cove in an otherwise ordinary neighborhood, I had the pleasure of meeting the owners, husband and wife team, Joe and Dolly LaCorte, who gave me the back-story behind their gluten-free concept.

Joe’s Meat Market has been around for 17 years, but only converted to gluten-free products about 4 years ago when the LaCorte’s discovered that their son’s babysitter had been diagnosed with celiac.  “We would hear horror stories,” Dolly recalled, “about how it would cost her $14 to buy a loaf of bread…She would go to an upscale food market, come out with 2 bags of groceries and it would cost her $300”.

Moved by her plight, Dolly partnered up with her hubby, envisioning a gluten-free haven for those who suffered from celiac.  She began her hunt for gluten-free suppliers, and Joe’s now offers 50 different gluten-free products to its clientele.  Each product is heavily researched beforehand and handpicked by Dolly, who is now on the hunt for a gluten-free wrap.

For those who suffer from celiac, Joe’s Meat Market really is a safe-haven – offering affordable and easily accessible gluten-free meals.  I fully recommend Joe’s Meat Market to anyone interested in losing weight and living healthy.

Joe’s Meat Market is located at 28 Main St., South Bound Brook, NJ 08880.  For more information regarding their services and products, contact them at (732) 356-4557, or visit them at http://joes-meatmarket.com.
