Can You OD on Fruit?

According to Dr. Richard Johnson, professor of medicine at the University of Colorado, sugar is almost as addictive as cocaine and since there is sugar in fruit, continuing with the metaphor – the answer would be YES.

I’m sure this raises some questions like WHY, HOW, REALLY?!

Well, let’s put it this way, fruits most certainly have their benefits, however, they also contain a good amount of fructose.  Remember that fructose makes up about 55% of high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) (see our entry on HFCS), which has detrimental health effects including diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity.

It is recommended that we keep consumption of fructose to below 25 grams per day.  How much is that in relation to the fruits and foods we eat?

Check out the chart below.  It’s not difficult to see how easily one might be able to consume over the daily-recommended amount.

Bottom line: Fruits have their benefits, but keep consumption to a minimum.  2-3 servings of fruit per day is great, but keep it at that.  The rest of your diet should consist of mostly greens and protein.
