How to Eat Healthy While on Vacation

Finding the motivation to eat healthy pre-vacation is not too difficult, it’s sticking to the healthy eating plan WHILE ON vacation where most of us run into some trouble. You might be thinking, “I’m on vacation, so I’m going to enjoy myself”.

Well, you’re right! You worked hard getting your nutrition in place so that YOU COULD enjoy yourself! The goal is to maintain AND enjoy. Now the big question is, “how do you do that?” Here are my top 5 favorite tips for staying on track while traveling:

1. Eat breakfast! Don’t allow yourself to get too hungry. Maintain your personal nutrition plan during the day so that you will be able to enjoy your night-time fun.

2. Keep healthy snacks with you. Go grocery shopping beforehand – think nuts, healthy protein bars, fruits and veggies. Whether you’re lounging on the beach, hiking in the mountains, or sight seeing you’ll need these healthy handy so that you don’t fall prey to “whatever’s in front of you”.

3. Drink water and stay hydrated! A good rule of thumb is to drink 1/2 your body weight in water.

4. Stay away from “fast food”. Instead, indulge in a wonderful meal out.

5. Indulge at dinner for one hour, then be done! Or, indulge for a longer period of time and watch your portions. “Enjoy small portions of whatever you like, [and] eat slowly so you taste the food and feel a sense of satisfaction, enjoyment, and relaxation of the vacation,” suggests Diekman on WebMD.
